How Dense Is Grand Rapids

You can explore the density, by Census Precinct, 👉here👈

Most of the land area of the city is in the 2,000 - 4,000 souls per square mile range. Of course many things can influence density; land can be used for a variety of useful purposes such as parks, industry, rail yards, and institutions such as schools. And land can be gobbled up by unproductive purposes like highways and country clubs.

But what is the densest part of Grand Rapids? Downtown, certainly? Nope. Not even close. Heritage Hill, at least from the sounds of their shrieking at even the mention of land-use reform? Also, not close.

The densest part of Grand Rapids is Census Tract 32 at 10,956 souls per square mile, followed by the adjacent Tract 25 at 10, 638 souls sq/mi. This is the area of East Hills / "Center Of The Universe" and south along Diamond Ave.

Third place is Census Tract 39 at 10,652 souls sq/mi. Fourth place is Census Tract 31, slipping under the 10,000 souls number but still a respectable 9,956.

So, there are three tracts with a density over 10,000/sq/mi - a solidly urban density - and another three over 9,000. I cannot recall how many times I've heard 10,000/sq/mi is the threshold for real public transportation, etc... So, I feel that there needs to be some kind of formal announcement:

🎆Grand Rapids is officially an urban city!🎆
There can no longer be any debate, the Planners have spoken. Let the frequent buses roll, the lanes be painted bus-only red, and start putting up catenary over those railroad tracks - the EMUs are on order. Also, bike lanes everywhere! 😆
